Another tip of the cap to MINIs on the Tail of the Dragon which is taking place this weekend. This video shows a (almost) full run of the famed road from last year’s event with me in a 2007 MCS press car. Unfortunately several sections had to be cut out due to some traffic, but I think you generally get the idea. And keep in mind that this particular run was done casually with some regard for the law. continued →

In honor of MINIs on the Tail of the Dragon taking place this week we thought we’d pull out a video we create last year of our trip from Chicago. It gives you a small window into our 10 hour drive that day - including a shortened version of the ‘Dragon Night Run’ posted last year. continued →

(Updated) What happens with a full tanked up bike goes over a edge of the heavily forested ravine on the Dragon? Fire. Currently firefighters are battled the blaze which has now spread to around 10 acres. Here’s an excerpt from a local news crew:
Miller said the steep and rocky terrain prevents firefighters from making a direct attack on the fire. They were working to contain it between the highway and the Topoco power line.
Officials said the motorcyclist walked away from the crash.

In two weeks the largest non-official MINI event in North America will take place in a far western corner of North Carolina. For those that don’t know much about the Tail of the Dragon as a road or a MINI event, think of it this way; arguably the best roads in North American combined with some of the most beautiful rural scenery and hundreds of other MINI owners. Or to put it another way, if there’s one event that every MINI owner in North America should experience, this is probably it.

Over the last few weeks we’ve featured a number of videos shot at this year’s MINI’s on the Dragon event. For this week’s video Friday (yes, a day late) we thought it might be appropriate to put them all in one post for the ultimate look back at MOTD 2007. Enjoy…

Most likely the last of our Dragon video footage for 2007, this is a full compilation of all video I shot from my garage in Chicago to our Cabin at Fontana. It gives you a small window into our 10 hour drive that day - including a shortened version of the ‘Dragon Night Run’ posted last week. For a little continuity, I’ve synced it to another LCD Soundsystem song; “Jump into the Fire”. Unfortunately there’s no iTunes link as it’s only availble on a 7″ vinyl single from the UK. But if you’re dying to hear more, there’s always the vintage Harry Nilsson version or your friend and mine, Google.
And yes, it’s also sped up just a bit…

Another view of the Dragon, this time at night. It’s accompanied by the song that many around the MF Cabin last week came to know as my anthem, North American Scum by LCD Soundsystem. Enjoy.
Oh and yes, the video is sped up just a bit ;)

Today we’ve got the final video in our three part series on driving the Dragon in the new 2007 MCS. In this last portion I drive from Deal’s Gap towards Fontana Village. It’s not technically the “Dragon” but it’s a faster sweeping road that has am endearing character all it’s own.
Look for some in-car footage of the road itself later this week or early next.

Here’s the second video in our three part series on driving the Dragon in the new 2007 MCS. In this portion I drive from the middle of the Tenessee side to Deal’s Gap and the Tree of Shame. As you can tell by my school-boy giddiness, it’s probably the tightest and twistiest spot on the entire road.
Look for part three along with some in-car footage of the road itself later this week.

This is the first in a series of MOTD videos driving the new 2007 MCS. In this first video I take off from a Western point on the Dragon and drive into Deals Gap. We’ll have a few videos that feature strictly in-car footage of the road itself coming later this week.

The 2007 MCS press car is packed, the tank is full, and all my various batteries are charged. In the morning, we hit the interstate for 11 hours of pure road trip action. We should arrive at the Dragon tomorrow evening if all goes well. We’ll have pictures on the MotoringFile Flickr group posted throughout the event and a quick update or two provided the Fontana wifi (two sticks and a can) holds together.
